Tunisia, 2nd largest exporter of organic products in Africa

The CEPEX recently published on its site a detailed sector note on the overall situation of exports of the agricultural sector and the agri-food industry for the year 2016.

According to this note, the sector’s trade deficit accelerated to 71.4%, which was reflected in a fall in exports from the sector (-25%) and a slight increase in imports (+ 2.5%), and is actually explained by the decline in olive oil exports (-63%).

The note also states that Tunisia is the 2nd African country to export biological products and that 80% of these organic products are exported.

These organic products are essentially olive oil, dates, vegetables, aromatic and medicinal plants and vines. Tunisia exports more than 60 organic products to 5 continents.

The note specifies that these exports of organic products reached more than 35 thousand tons at the end of October 2016, amounting to nearly 290 million dinars, with the export of more than 60 varieties of organic production to 27 countries.

Italy was the first destination of these exports, followed by France, Spain and the USA.
