Tunisia: Cameroon appeals to Tunisia to develop renewable energy

The Government of Cameroon is expected to sign a partnership agreement with the Ecopark of Borj Cedria in the coming days. Its Minister of Water Resources, Basile Atangana Kouna and the Ambassador of Tunisia in Cameroon, Jalel Snoussi, are in talks on this subject.

The Tunisian diplomat recently made a courtesy visit to the minister, in company with Kamel Touati, advisor for foreign affairs at the Borj Cedria Technopark to discuss the establishment of such a structure in Cameroon for the purpose of training Engineers and researchers in renewable energies and sustainable energy.

The Ambassador told Citi Business that through this technology park, the Tunisian government aims to transfer know-how to Cameroon.

The training and research center will help Cameroon accelerate the pace in the energy sector, said Kamel Touati, stressing that the country will not need foreign experts to do so.

He said that the richest resource of Cameroon is its people and especially its engineers. “If engineers lack appropriate training, they will not be able to carry out development projects.

“Through this center, Cameroon will be able to develop its human resources and help the government to stop using foreign companies to develop its sustainable and renewable energy resources,” he said.

Water and Energy Minister Basile Atangana Kouna is optimistic, saying the fruit of this co-operation will undoubtedly come in the coming weeks.

Other projects such as that of the development of 100 MW solar panels could be launched in partnership with Tunisians, he added.

The minister said Cameroon is relying on hydroelectricity and is diversifying its energy sources to meet the growing demand.

The Tunisian investor representing the ministries of industry, energy and education assured that more opportunities are on the horizon.
