Tunisia: Customs modernization costs the state 500 MTD

The modernization of the customs costs the state a budget of around 500 million dinars,
Finance Minister Slim Chaker said on Monday, May 23, 2016.

In his remarks at a workshop on “the fight against smuggling and informal trade,” Slim Chaker added that a pilot plan over 5 years has been put in place.

“Through this program we want to express our strong support for customs so that it can fulfill this mission and face this dangerous phenomenon,” said the minister.

He also announced the forthcoming opening of new offices of the customs to ensure the coverage of the entire Tunisian territory.

This is an important step, especially as smuggling has continued to grow in recent years in Tunisia, the minister pointed out.
