A draft technical cooperation agreement for the development of water harvesting techniques for sustainable agriculture and improving the resilience of Tunisia’s southeastern regions (governorate of Gabes, Medenine and Tataouine ), was signed on Monday in Tunis between Tunisia and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The project with a cost of 476,000 dollars, funded by FAO, aims to promote the collection of water, through a participatory approach, integrating local stakeholders in each region covered by the project, Ahmed BOUGACHA, FAO’s assistant representative in Tunisia told TAP news agency on the inauguration of the new headquarters of the FAO subregional Office for North Africa and the World Food Day 2016.
The FAO Representative in Tunisia and coordinator of the FAO Sub Regional Office for North Africa, Lamourdia Thiombiano said the project, spanning a period of two years, is part of the fight against water scarcity and seeks the best use of rainwater in the aforementioned
regions, noting that this year’s World Food Day is dedicated to the analysis of the evolution of food and agriculture to address the adverse effects of climate change.
The official stressed the commitment of FAO to further strengthen its cooperation with Tunisia and Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) countries, noting that FAO has recently strengthened the team of officials and technical experts based at the FAO subregional Office for North Africa, covering nine priority areas, namely agricultural, fisheries and aquaculture, animal health, plant protection and production, forests, water and soil, climate changes, the Rotterdam Convention, agriculture, immigration, youth employment and the development of value chains.
