The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) granted, on Thursday, a loan of 22 million Kuwaiti dinars (around 159 million dinars), to Tunisia to finance the project of rehabilitation of drinking water systems.
A loan agreement was signed by Yassine Brahim, Minister of Development, Investment and International Cooperation and KFAED Director General Abdelwahab Ahmed Al-Badr.
“This credit is granted at a fixed interest rate of 1.5%, with a repayment period of 25 years including a grace period of 5 years,” said Ahmed Al-Badr.
For his part, Brahim noted that this project is meeting the growing demand for drinking water in Tunisia, until the year 2030, improving governance of water systems, environmental protection and health and reducing leakage in the networks of drinking water.
The project, which will be completed by the end of 2021, consists of the rehabilitation of supply pipelines of drinking water, the installation of new water networks, renewal of meters and the achievement of pumping stations and water desalination.
The minister reminded of the components of the project, namely the renewal of the main networks of drinking water in Greater Tunis (18.6 km) at a cost of 17.27 MTD, renewal of water pipes between Zaghouan and El Jebel West (51km) at a cost of 23.86 MTD and rehabilitation and renewal of the Northwest pipes (19.38 MTD).
The project also includes the renewal of piping supply and distribution of water in the Southeast, at a cost of 36.72 MD, strengthening networks of drinking water in Sousse (34.09 MD) and the achievement of a desalination plant of sea water with a capacity of 6000 m3 in Kerkennah (17.92 MTD).
