DR Congo requires US$14b for infrastructure

The Democratic Republic of Congo requires US$14 billion to provide necessary infrastructure in various sectors of the economy, according to Planning Minister Olivier Kamitatu.

Speaking in Kinshasa Thursday, at the official launch of the programme, the Minister said the infrastructural projects being embarked upon included roads, rails and bridges, building of schools and universities to enhance education as well as projects to lift the water, sanitation and health sectors.

According to Mr. Kamitatu, the Congolese government has already raised US$9 billion within the framework of cooperation between China and the DR Congo.

He said US$600 million had been raised from South Africa while India is going to release US$750 million, bringing the total to nearly US$11 billion.

“The Congolese government, through its own efforts, is going to (make up) the difference with a view to implementing President Joseph Kabila’s programme,” Mr. Kamitatu said.
