Prisons in regions to break prison overcrowding, which is over 150%, says Kais Soltani

In an exclusive interview with African Manager on Wednesday (January 18th), spokesperson for the General Directorate of Prisons and Rehabilitation, Kais Soltani, spoke about the construction of a prison for terrorists, the forthcoming creation of several penitentiary units and the number of detainees in cases related to terrorism…

Interview:

What do you think of the construction of a prison for terrorists?

The file on the proposal for the construction of a prison for terrorists will be examined by the Prime Ministry and the decision has not yet been taken in an official way.

It is noted that the implementation of such a project will cost Tunisia dearly and will require approximately a 100-million-dinar budget to install a unit that meets international standards.

Are Tunisian prisons really a target for terrorists?

The terrorist threats against the prison units still exist; nevertheless we have taken a series of preventive measures in all the prisons spread all over the country.

Recently, we created the “Threat Management Brigade”. The security guards of this organ are well equipped to work under the best conditions.

In addition, our senior security officers and prison officers carried out specific training and received training to combat any terrorist threat and to face possible conflicts between the prisoners…

What is the number of women detained over terrorist cases?

Currently we do not have an exact figure but about 40 women are jailed for their involvement in terrorism related cases.

What projects will be launched soon?

There are many projects, including the construction of new penitentiary units in regions, for example in Bili, under the Nabeul governorate, where work has progressed considerably.

I would like to point out that recently the first phase of the construction of the civil prison in Beja has begun.

In general, work is done for years and requires a large sum of money.

These projects aim to avoid overcrowding in Tunisian prisons, which has exceeded 150%.
