Tunisia: assets of banks and financial institutions represent 125% of GDP

The number of banks and financial institutions approved in Tunisia was 42 at the end of 2017, institutions following the merger transaction by absorption of Tunisie Leasing by its subsidiary Tunisie Factoring.

This number is divided between 23 resident banks, 8 leasing institutions, 2 factoring companies, 2 merchant banks and 7 non-resident banks.

According to the 2017 annual report of the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), the activity of these institutions has experienced an acceleration of its growth rate in 2017 compared to 2016, as evidenced by the increase in total assets by 12.6% in 2017 against 10.2% in 2016.

The share of banks ‘and financial institutions’ assets in GDP increased by 5.7 percentage points to 124.6%.

At the same time, the bank branch network increased by 86 branches in 2017 to 1860 branches, i.e. an agency for 6,154 inhabitants against an agency for 6,369 inhabitants at the end of 2016.
