Tunisia: CPG expects 55% increase in phosphate sales volume by end of 2019

The Gafsa Phosphate Company (CPG) is eying a 55% rise in the quantities of phosphate sales by the end of 2019, to 4.5 million tons, provided some conditions are met.

According to a document published by the CPG’s Central Directorate in April 2019, this rise depends on the reactivation of rail line No.15 (between Redeyef and Metlaoui), the revitalization of transport from Om Larayes and Redeyef cities with a phosphate stock estimated at about 2 million tons, and the sustained production in the company’s different units.

Rail line No.15, which can ensure the transport of some 2 million tons of phosphates per year, has been blocked following the floods that had affected the mining basin early October 2017.

The volume of the commercial phosphate transported by the wagons of the Tunisian National Railway Company (SNCFT) from the mining basin to the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) and the Tunisian-Indian Fertilizers Company (TIFERT) edged down 66% at the end of 2017, 76% end of 2018 to 1.7 million tons, from 7.3 million tons in 2010.
