Tunisia – foreign trade: exports continue to drop in volume for fifth month

The volume (at constant price) of Tunisia’s exports decreased by 3.5%, while that of imports dropped by 3.1% in the first five months of 2019, compared to the same period last year, according to data published on June 20, 2019 by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

At the price level, they rose by 19.3% for exports and by 20.9% for imports.

Excluding energy, prices went up 19.2% in exports and 19.6% in imports, compared with the first five months of 2018. Indeed, energy recorded increases of 20.8% in exports and 30.2% in imports.

In the details, exports by volume fell for the textile-clothing and leather sector by -2.3%, the energy sector by -6.1% and the agriculture and Agribusiness sector -21.2%.

In addition, exports of the mining, phosphates and derivatives sector increased in volume by 5.3%.

In terms of imports, their volume is marked by a drop in the agriculture and agri-food industry sector by -4.4%, the textile-clothing and leather sector by -3.6% and the mechanical and electrical industries sector by -6.4%. On the other hand, imports of the energy sector increased in volume by 7.5%.

It should be recalled that in terms of value (current prices), Tunisia’s foreign trade in the first five months of 2019 reached values of 19.6 billion dinars in exports and 27.7 billion in imports, thereby posting an increase of 15.1% in exports and 17.2% in imports, compared to the same period of the year 2018.
