Tunisia: industrial exports post significant increase

Exports of the industrial sector went up from 14,502.6 MD during the first six months of 2017 to 18,318.9 MD during the same period of the year 2018, posting an increase of 26.3%.

This is reflected in the latest figures released by the Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation (APII).

The industrial sector imported 22,842.9 MD during the first six months of 2018 against 19,103.2 MD during the same period of 2017, up 19.6%.

Thus the commercial balance of the industrial sector stands at -4,523.9 MD against -4,600.6 MD during the same period of 2017.

The rise recorded in exports is mainly due to the agri-food industries whose exports reached 2,167.6 MD, against 1,070.7 MD during the first six months of 2017, up 102.5%.

The exports of the ceramics and glass building materials industry sector also increased, from 237.1 MD to 324.8 MD during the first six months of 2018 (+ 37%).

Similarly, exports of the mechanical and electrical industries sector grew by 19.4% from 7,482.8 MD to 8,934.8 MD during the first six months of 2018.

The sector of textile and clothing industries followed suit with exports of the order of 3,699.5 MD against 3,024.3 MD during the first six months of 2017, up 22.3%.

The same goes for the leather and footwear industries, whose exports increased by 25.5% to 769.5 MD vs. 613.4 MD in the first six months of 2017.

Similarly, exports of the various industries sector rose 27.4% to 1,352.3 MD against 1,061.6 MD during the first six months of 2017.

Industrial imports increased for all sectors. These increases ranged from 0.9% for the agri-food industry to 26.4% for the miscellaneous industries sector.
