Tunisia: only 13% of payments are made by bank cards

“The number of bank cards issued has risen annually by an average of 8.9% to reach 3.2 million cards at the end of 2016, according to the latest banking supervision report for 2016, recently published by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).

The CenBank also noted that “electronic money transactions recorded an average annual growth of 7.3% between 2012 and 2016.
However and despite the development observed, the activity of electronic payments in Tunisia remains low, since 87% of e-money transactions take the form of withdrawals from ATMs, while only 13% are in the form of payments through very small businesses. “

It should also be noted, according to the same source, that over the past 5 years, the banking network has experienced a strong expansion with the opening of 324 branches, 60% of which have been opened by 5 banks.

This made it possible to improve the banking rate which reached an agency for 6,372 inhabitants in 2016 against an agency for 7,437 inhabitants in 2012.

The coastline is home to 87% of the banking network, of which 41% of branches are located in the Greater Tunis area.
