Tunisia: trade deficit widens as imports soar 35% in January

The value of Tunisian exports stood at 2.253 billion dinars at the end of January against 2.055 billion on the same date a year earlier, posting an increase of 9.6%, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Monday, February 13, 2017.

As for imports, they soared 35.6% in January compared to the end of January 2016, reaching a value of 3.474 billion dinars against 2.562 billion a year earlier.

To this end, the trade deficit widened in January 2017 to stand at 1.221 billion dinars against 507.2 million dinars in January 2016.

Consequently, the rate of coverage of exports by imports fell by 15.4 percentage points to 64.8% against 80.2% at the end of January 2016.
