THE United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has announced its intention to intervene in the Northern Uganda Cotton Programme with a $100,000(Shs185 million) boost.
Ms Margot Ellis, the Head of USAID country office made the announcement during a meeting with the Minister of Tourism, Trade and industry, Mr Daudi Migereko, recently.

Ellis had accompanied the US Deputy National Security Advisor, Mr Faryar Shirzad, who had paid a courtesy call at Migereko’s office on Farmers House.

The courtesy call was partly a result of the recently concluded visit by President Yoweri Museveni, to USA in which Hon. Daudi Migereko accompanied him and addressed potential investors in the USA and Ugandan community in the Diaspora.
“The Northern Uganda Cotton Programme is in line with the government’s policy of poverty alleviation. We support its extension to other areas of the country,” Migereko said.

Shirzad encouraged Uganda to join the Millennium Development Account, which could provide resources for the targeted interventions in investment and infrastructure.
He praised Uganda’s vision of achieving sustainable economic growth, in particular, the emphasis on addressing production bottlenecks with focus on the importance of value addition and linking such production to available markets.

Migereko said Uganda would always evaluate the USA negotiating position at the multilateral level for an objective outcome and provide the necessary support. He, however, said such positions should demonstrate mutual gains in both market access and production sectors.

In respect of the Millennium Challenge Account, Uganda is preparing a proposal, which will be submitted in due course.
“As a prerequisite, we are addressing concerns about corruption and this is being done through strengthening of relevant institutions that include offices of the Auditor General, Accountant General, Permanent Secretaries and the Inspector of Government,” Migereko said.
